When making walking sticks on of the least explored parts is the actual making of the hiking stick leash or holding area. Many people settle for a simple string or leather cord through the wood. However, if you are making your own walking or hiking stick why settle for an ordinary hand leash or cord?

The image to the right are cords available online from several sources. they come in many colors, styles and even widths. You buy the walking stick cord making material by the foot or yard.  www.Strapworks.com is my favorite. Type to match the cord color to the wood or own hand made walking hiking stick style Are you making a southwest design? Wood spirit hiking walking stick wood carving? Or using a staining walking stick making technique?

When you get the cord feed one end through your home made walking stick and then use the palm sewing tool sew the ends together. It's simple and adds a great touch to your hiking stick making project.

Trick: heat the end for the strap with a match to prevent fraying of the cord.

Now if you really want a custom look when making your walking  hiking sticks then learn some simple rope weaving techniques, such as the one in the walking hiking stick making guides. Rope weaving handles and walking stick hold areas prevent hand slippage and gives you added versatility.   Making hiking sticks from wood you collected from the metal tips, carving, staining and even handle making is a great hobby for all ages.  Hwo to make walking hiking sticks and staffs encompasses wood collecting, curing, staining, carving, rope weaving and many other techniques to make unique one of a kind walking and hiking sticks staffs.

i came across your blog whilst searching the net for wooden carved eagle heads for a walking staff i have made already.

i am not 'carver', but would like an eagle head to fix to the top of my rowan staff.

Usually walking stick carving consist of just the upper body unless you are doing wood carvings like snakes, repeated carving patterns or repeated designs down the stick.

If you send an image of your rowan stick you want wood carve I can review it for carving design.

I have sold carve walking and hiking sticks including a couple wizard staffs locally. Some of them had carvings, others inlayed rocks/crystals, and others. Making walking sticks and staffs is a hobby but I'm willing to review your rowan stick to see if its something to consider wood carving for you.

Thank your for your question!
